The FISU World University Games: The Games are the world's largest event for student-athletes and the second-largest global Olympic multi-sport event, second only to the Olympic Games. Held every other year in the odd year, the Games feature the best collegiate and university athletes from over 150 countries competing in 15 compulsory sports and 3 optional sports during a 12–day event.

United States International University Sports Federation (USIUSF): Headquartered in Orlando, Florida, the USIUSF is the United States member of FISU. The USIUSF selects and supports a U.S. Host City to be its partner, whenever the USIUSF puts forth a bid for a major FISU event, such as the World University Games.

North Carolina Local Organizing Committee (NCLOC): The Local Organizing Committee is responsible for planning, organizing, and executing the 2029 FISU World University Games.

Award of the 2029 FISU Games to North Carolina, USA: In the afternoon of Tuesday, January 10, 2023, the FISU Executive Committee, during its meeting in Lake Placid, NY, prior to the 2023 World University Games Winter, unanimously approved North Carolina USA as the host of the 2029 FISU World University Games.
