North Carolina’s University Hub

The Piedmont Triad region encompasses Greensboro, Winston-Salem and High Point, North Carolina. Often referred to as the Triad, the region has a population of over 1.7 million and is a Top 40 Metro in the United States.

The Triad is a major educational center, with 11 colleges and universities and has served as host to some of the country’s most important events.

The Triangle

North Carolina’s Triangle region - covering Wake, Durham, and Orange counties and the primary cities of Durham, Raleigh, Chapel Hill, and Cary (commonly referred to as “the triangle”) - is the number one region in the country for college basketball. It is the only region that placed TWO teams - the Duke University Blue Devils and the University of North Carolina Tar Heels - into the 2022 NCAA Basketball Championships Final Four in New Orleans. It is also the only community that boasts three ACC universities.

The Triangle has become a worldwide technology, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical center boasting Research Triangle Park as the world’s largest research park with an employment hub with over 35,000 employees.

The Host Cities

The individual host cities that comprise the Triad and Triangle regions of North Carolina have deep histories and have experienced creative development driven by innovation, dreaming, and adventure. The cities share top-performing economy, transportation resources, government services, a strong residential market, numerous universities and major business recruitment successes.

All of the cities within the Triad and Triangle area, collectively known as The Piedmont Region, have a wealth of community attractions, museums, performing arts centers, zoos and aquariums, award-winning restaurants from world-class haute cruising to down-home, tangy, pit-cooked barbecue. There are also shopping centers, exciting nightlife, breweries and distilleries offering entertainment, culture, dining, and of course sports for everyone.

With well over 100 top-tier major competitive sports facilities in place, North Carolina's University Hub is well-equipped to host the 2029 FISU World University Games and provide exceptional venues for both training and competition. With all these already existing state-of-the-art venues, no new venue construction or major renovations or modifications will be necessary to host the Games. We’ve got the venues, the experience, the technology, and the know-how to provide an exceptional Games experience to all.
